The Sheboygan County Aviation Corporation teamed up with Jos. Schmitt & Sons to build an Aviation Welcome Center & Education Facility at the Sheboygan County Airport.
Jos. Schmitt & Sons helped campaign a fundraiser for the new center. On January 12, 2004, over one million dollars in donations had been raised and the campaign was still in progress. Enough was raised and the project was completed thanks to numerous private donations.
The facility will be a “Gateway to Aviation,” said Dan Miller, Sheboygan County Aviation Corporation President. The facility was built to serve the role of welcoming visitors, promoting aviation, educating and motivating future pilots to learn more about aeronautical science and to gain hands-on experience, allowing young and old alike to anticipate the experience of flight and fostering pride in the community for its rich and unique aviation history.
The facility itself hosts an observation deck for visitors can watch aircraft taking off and landing on the runways, aviation museum with displays that will pertain to Sheboygan County’s aviation history and military aircraft, education lab for working on and allowing visitors to experience hands-on learning, Aviation library to provide the public with videos, books, publications, software, and more, and classroom and education programs on various topics such as aviation maintenance, restoration, aircraft construction and flight safety.
