The Humane Society of Sheboygan County

We’ve had the privilege of assisting in the construction and improvement of facilities that provide care and shelter to our furry friends in need. As Former Humane Society President, Steven Schmitt was heavily invested in seeing this project come to fruition. The 21,000-square-foot new building includes a veterinary clinic, enhanced and expanded animal areas, an outdoor dog run area, a community room, and a retail store. The new animal shelter was funded by a $4 million capital campaign, with $1 million donated by Bea and Tom Hollfelder, on behalf of their late daughter, Carol.

Salvation Army— Emergency Lodge & Medical Clinic (Sheboygan, WI)

The Salvation Army expanded their emergency shelter with an addition and remodeling that added 5,282 square footage and 15 new beds, increasing capacity to 45 beds. The shelter is available year-round to assist those who have experienced a crisis leading to homelessness. They offer temporary housing while offering services to assist in securing employment and stable housing.

Kohler Center for Marsh Education (Elkhart Lake, WI)

Jos. Schmitt was hired by the Friends of the Sheboygan Marsh as the general contractor for a new educational center at the Sheboygan Broughton Marsh Park & Campground. The LEED-certified facility features an atrium for nature displays and exhibits, campground toilet and shower facilities, a kitchen, and a multipurpose room which will be used for community meetings, small banquets, and classroom and laboratory space for Camp Y-Koda’s outdoor skills and education program.

Sheboygan Broughton Marsh Tower (Elkhart Lake, WI)

Friends of the Sheboygan Marsh had a vision to construct the tallest wooden observation tower in the State of Wisconsin. Before construction began, they were still short $130,000 to reach their fundraising goal. However, Jos. Schmitt arranged for the Friends of the Sheboygan Broughton Marsh to finish paying for the project as donations were received. In 2009, Jos. Schmitt turned their vision into a reality when they completed the Sheboygan Marsh Tower. By 2010 the tower was completely paid for. The 80-ft tower allows visitors to not only overlook the park but also the 13,000-acre Wildlife Area.

Shaw Family Playground & Shelter (Sheboygan, WI)

Jos. Schmitt provided construction services for the pavilion shelter. The fully ADA-compliant playground provides accessibility for children of all physical abilities. The Shaw family partnered with the Friends of the Sheboygan Jaycees, who have provided support and will also be managing the long-term endowment fund. Steven Schmitt of Jos. Schmitt helped lead the Lakeshore area Fundraising and Community Volunteer Construction efforts together with other community leaders, individuals, and organizations.
